“Recognizing His Authority” | March 8, 2026

“When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him…
‘I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.’”
— Luke 7:9

Authority is recognized not just by power, but by response. In this passage, a Roman centurion approaches Jesus with remarkable faith, a grieving widow encounters His compassion, and John the Baptist wrestles with questions from prison. Each scene reveals that Jesus’ authority is not merely declared — it is demonstrated through His actions and confirmed through Scripture.

FINDS FAITH — Approaches Him with Confidence

v 3, 6, 8

  • The centurion trusted Jesus’ authority without requiring His presence.
  • True faith recognizes that Christ’s authority extends beyond physical limits.
  • Confidence in Jesus grows when we understand who He truly is.

FIGHTS FEAR — Opposing His Authority Is Scary

v 4, 16, 19–20

  • When Jesus’ authority becomes undeniable, people must decide how to respond.
  • Some respond with awe and reverence; others struggle with doubt and fear.
  • Even faithful believers like John the Baptist can wrestle with uncertainty.

IS WITNESSED — His Actions Confirm His Nature

v 3, 13–15, 18–19, 22

  • Jesus’ compassion for the widow shows the heart behind His authority.
  • Miracles are not just displays of power — they reveal the identity of the Messiah.
  • Jesus points John’s disciples back to prophecy fulfilled in real time.

Referenced prophecy:

  • Book of Isaiah 35:4–6

The blind see, the lame walk, and the good news is proclaimed — exactly as Isaiah foretold.
